Longblock Assembly:
This page details the longblock assembly process. Assembly took place Fall 2005.

Multiple times the engine was primed before being dropped into the car.


Block

All oil and water passages were thoroughly cleaned of any debris using engine brushes.

Rotating Assembly

New Federal Mogul Copper-lead main bearings
Stock crank, rebalanced for DSS 306 low compression rotating assembly. Freshly polished and cleaned from the machine-shop.

Crank measurements

A dial indicator used to check end-play on the crank, end play was 0.005" (within tolerances outlined in the manual)
Sealer applied per the installation instructions for #5 Main Bearing. Note: only a small amount is required

Polished crank reinstalled into block with new Federal Mogul Main bearings

(Fel-Pro 1011-2) headgaskets

Right-side gasket installed

Left-side gasket installed


"Front" must be towards the front of the engine on both sides when installing headgaskets.

ARP 7/16" studs sealed using ARP thread sealer

Both gaskets installed with studs sealed using ARP thread sealer


Heads torqued using ARP studs + ARP Moly lube with 70ft-lbs short, and 80ft-lbs on long studs

Both gaskets installed with studs sealed using ARP thread sealer

Installing lifter locks


Front Timing Cover

Hand-polished stock cover

Clear-coated with high-temperature paint for corrosion resistance

Outside of cover, seal was replaced after picture was taken
Front cover installed


Oil Pan and Pick-Up Tube Installation

Oil Pump Pickup installed

Clearance was checked using clay prior to assembly

7 Quart Canton Oil Pan fitted to block
Polished Stock Front Cover and Oil Pan installed


Harmonic Balancer

PowerBond SFI Approved Balancer

New Balancer and pointer at 0-Degrees (TDC)
 


Roller Rockers

Headers and Valve Covers

Using a drill the engine was primed until oil seeped out of all passages (including each rocker arm)
